If I'm in a good spot with cover, I can usually take out an axis long range if I keep the recoil down as much as possible, either by crouching or prone. The Thompson is something I probly use more than the Garand lately, however the recoil can be challenging to a newbie. The garand is faster than the Kar 43 (axis), but doesnt have as good a range.
Its a great way to practice features, learn maps etc.Īs far as actual classes, I play Ally most of the time, and prefer the Garand and Thompson. I can play 16 player games on my comp (depends on your configuration, more bots will slow things down a bit), and the bots are pretty good, actually very good when it comes to aim sometimes. If you cant find any servers to play on (I play on Elend DoD), try Sturmbot. I suggest you just try all of them and see how well you do. The best class depends on the map and how good you are. You can bind the 2 keys that control class/team options, as well as using the ingame menu GUI (mines bound to V, but I think the default is C like said). The difference between being familiar with the gameplay and not being familiar with it (same goes for the levels) makes all the difference in the world. You probably just need to get better at the game - really. Day of Defeat seems to run higher latencies than most games I've seen. Your latency isn't helping you, but it's not a complete killer either. You've probably noticed the game's unforgiving recoil try to crouch or go prone when you shoot. The german light infanty is pretty awesome if you can aim and shoot very quickly. I wouldn't call either of them "the best" though, but I wouldn't say that for the other classes either. Both are well balanced characters, so it's an easy class with which to familiarize yourself with the game. They both have sub-machine guns that are reasonably accurate.
I guess as an easy way to start, try using the allied sergeant and the axis unteroffizier.
However, some classes work better in certain situations than others, so it will depend on the level, your teammates, and your playing style. I wouldn't say there is a 'best class' per se, they've done a pretty good job of getting some balance. Either way, you can set it to whatever you want. That said, let me comment on a few of your questions.Ĭlass changes can be made by pressing a key command - the bindings can be changed in the menu screen, but I think the default is 'C.' IIRC the change team key is 'M,' but it's been a while. Day of Defeat is a big adjustment from other games like Counterstrike in terms of gameplay.
